Dijkstra, W. Dijkstra, Wessel Dijkstra

Wessel Dijkstra was born in Schoonoord, Netherlands in 1944. Studied at the Minerva Academy in Groningen from 1963 to 1968. Lived and worked in Emmen until 1994. The first solo exhibition was made in 1970. During the early years, it is recognized in his work, the influence of Byzantine Art. Since 1979 use of square structures, schemes predominantly geometry. Starts travelling to Portugal in 1981 where he studies the Portuguese tiles. In 1983 went to Morocco to observe / study the Islamic Art (Mosaic). Between 1983 and 2001 has worked as a resident artist of the Galerie de Lange, Emmen. In 1999 a retrospective exhibition was conducted, \"30 Years of Wessel Dijkstra Art\" at Centrum Beeldende Kunst, Emmen. Although wood is the prevalent material in his work, also employs other materials such as PVC and paper. In 1994 is moved to Portugal where he still lives and works.
