Kruseman van Elten, H.D. Kruseman van Elten,born 1829-1904)

H.D. Kruseman van Elten was born in Alkmaar, Netherlands, where he received his artistic training under Dutch master C. Lieste. During his early career he received substantial recognition throughout Europe where his paintings were widely exhibited in his native Holland as well as Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and England before he emigrated to America in 1865. One of the most brilliant landscape painters working during the latter part of the 19th century, he also excelled in picturesque harbor views and fishing scenes created during his sojourn in America between the years 1865 and 1897. An extremely prolific artist, two hundred of his paintings were auctioned at the American Art Guild in New York, during a fund raiser for the artist\'s aid society in 1905. Van Elten exhibited un-interrupted for almost thirty-five years (1866-1900) at the National Academy of Design, where he was elected a member in 1883. He was also a member of both the Amsterdam and Rotterdam artist\'s guilds. His work won the gold medal at the Amsterdam International Expo in 1860, and the important Chevalier Order of the Lion in 1880. Today, the National Gallery in Washington D.C. lists over 100 of his works in their archives.
