Poreau, O. Poreau, Oswald Poreau 1877-1955

Oswald Poreau was a Post-Impressionist painter of landscapes, harbour scenes, flowers and portraits. After finishing military school, he received his initial artistic training from family friend Joseph Quinaux in 1894. He later studied architecture and fine arts at the Academy of Brussels under the tutorship of Jan Stallaert until 1900. He married a musician in Paris in 1905 and worked a few years near Barbizon in France. Poreau returned to Belgium and travelled many times to Germany, England and France. Back in Belgium, Poreau painted mostly the coast, the borders of the river Schelde and the industrial landscapes of the Borinage.
