Joop Stierhout, born in Arnhem in 1911, is a well known artist of Amsterdam city views (in addition to landscapes and (flower) still lifes). After graduating from the art academy (Rijksacademie voor beeldende kunsten) in Amsterdam, he received a royal sponsorship for making city views.

His city views are characterized by their colors and by their point of view (usually made on location from the first floor of a building, giving them a typical angle. Furthermore, subjects in his city views vary from lively (Leidsestraat at day time) to introvert (early morning mist at a canal).
