Description

Piet Cottaar Senior Petrus Johannes Maria Cottaar was born in 1878 and lived with his family in Overschie since 1930. He had 1 son and 2 daughters. He mainly painted flowers and still lifes. Nowadays he is also seen as one of the best flower painters in the Netherlands. He was struggling as the son of a baker. If possible, he would crept to the attic to paint. He developed all the techniques himself, he never received any training. After years of working in the bakery, he got married and then reluctantly had to work in his father-in-law's laundry. However, as a result of lead poisoning, he became partially paralyzed and unable to work. He has always continued to do painting. These paintings were sold by his wife for little money and sometimes even exchanged for a bag of potatoes, for example. He also painted old-Dutch landscapes and through mediation of acquaintances on the passenger ship 'New Amsterdam' many of these works ended up in America. In 1950 he suddenly died of the effects of blood poisoning.
